‘Behind the Mask’ is inspired by Japanese Noh Theatre. This complex artform
understands and conveys the human condition through its multi dimensional
masks, dance, music and staging. The masks used in Noh serve as a multi
dimensional tool for storytelling as each mask represents a human
characteristic disguised as a archetype.

Actors who are traditionally men must also train to depict women which
is explored in this collection through traditionally ‘masculine’ suiting
pieces. Chunky sweaters that overlap and restrict are ‘binding’ the
wearer to a limited set of movements through which they must retell the
narrative of the human condition.

Highly skilled actors must use restricted movements and
behind a mask must communicate a wide range of
emotions. Depending on where you are on stage and how
the actors move, what one mask looks like to someone may
look entirely different to another.
